Abstract
Background: The purpose of this study was to perform comprehensive systematic review of studies on cardiac rehabilitation program for patients with ischemic coronary heart disease in Korea.

Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted. The electronic search was conducted using RISS, DBpia, KISS, and National Assembly Library with the key words of cardiac rehabilitation, cardiac rehabilitation education and exercise from 1996 to 2011. Based on inclusion criteria, 25 research articles were included in this review and analyzed by guidelines of the cardiac rehabilitation programs done by the American Heart Association (AHA).

Results: The characteristics of patients were mostly of myocardial infarction and unstable angina, 50-59 years old, and male. Educational sessions were provided twice or three times, and each lesson lasted less than 60 min. Exercise was done 3 times per week for 6-8 weeks. Most educational contents were about risk factors, but there was rare psychological intervention. Most exercise was performed as range of motion, stretching, treadmill, walking, and cycle ergometer. A large percentage of outcome parameters were hemodynamic changes, exercise capacity, and health behavior.

Conclusions: There are various types of cardiac rehabilitation program in literature. Therefore, we need to develop the Korean standard protocol to reduce mortality and recurrence after angina and infarction for the patients with ischemic coronary heart disease.
